India
In her India series, Lynne Deutch tackles the second most populous country on Earth by narrowing the frame of the viewer. Instead of broad street views or compressed telephoto shots illustrating the immense concentration of people, Lynne humanizes India by bringing you closer to the individuals that make up the place. As viewers, we're used to seeing scenes packed full of merchants, animals, and residents fighting for space in congested streets and alleys. By traveling outside the city centers Lynne exposes us to images of India we're not accustomed to; enormous, stunning landscapes; empty lakes that seem to stretch to the horizon; portraits of solitary figures against wide open vistas; children smiling into the camera. It's photographs like these that are necessary to dispel stereotypes and assumptions and to remind us that, indeed, each of the 1.3 billion Indians has a story of their own.
