Kenya
Lynne Deutch's most personal body of work is certainly her Kenya series, with photographs that touch on the essence of humanity. Every image is shot from close range but they don't feel at all like portraits. Instead, they look to document the lives of an east-African village as if Lynne was part of the community herself. The works center around daily life; women holding infants, children playing, villagers gossiping with one another, all while displaying fantastic wardrobes and jewelry. It is clear that these people do not have a lot but there is an overwhelming sense of joy that resonates through the series. What Lynne is able to capture so well are the natural moments that occur daily. She doesn't look to create unrealistic accounts that will shock viewers, instead finding the moments that bring the viewer closer to people we know so little about.
