This category is appropriate for images created or drastically altered using the photo apps on your phone. Although digitally manipulated images are allowed in all of our categories, this is a category exclusively showcasing such “app-art.”
LANDSCAPES & WILDLIFE
In many ways, landscapes are the most difficult kind of photos to produce with a mobile phone camera. Most landscape shots taken with a DSLR have the advantage…of true interchangeable lenses, depth-of-field control, filters and ultra-long exposure times. Mobiles have few of these options. Yet, stunning images of the natural world are produced every day by mobile photographers.
MACRO/DETAILS
When you magnify a subject, you bring your viewers into a world impossible to witness with the naked eye.
PEOPLE
The People category is always the busiest in the MPA because it’s about everybody’s favorite subject: our species!
PORTRAITS & SELF PORTRAITS
The simplest definition is that portraits are artistic representations of the likeness of person.
Photographic portraits are of friends or strangers, formal or informal, staged or captured spontaneously. The subject is most often aware of the camera. The aim of the photographer is to express something about the subject’s character, essence, likeness, shape, and even mood.
THE DARKNESS
Think shadows, mystery, low key exposures, night shots, deep, rich, dark colours and misty, cryptic Black and Whites.
TRAVEL & TRANSPORTATION
Travel photography is about conveying through images an area’s landscape, people, cultures, customs, architecture and history.
SILHOUETTES
Silhouettes create such powerful images, due to the simple isolation of subject. They remove all distractions and all you see is the a perfectly sharp black outline against a beautiful background.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
A mobile phone is perhaps the perfect tool for the street photographer unobtrusive, light, and relatively simple to use.
WATER/SNOW/ICE
Water, in all it’s forms, is an endlessly inspiring photographic subject.
